Are you a Belizer?
April 9, 2008
Please help the Belize 2008 trip and microlending project by purchasing a paper sand dollar from participants. Sand dollars will be displayed around campus recognizing those who chose to give to this extraordinary cause. You may purchase your sand dollar (they are just a buck!) from any Belize trip student participant, or Melanie Evans in Horrigan-225K, Jessica Randall in Petrik Hall, or Jim Welp in BOB-330.
Project CURE
March 31, 2008
In addition to our microlending and service work in Belize, we’re also planning to deliver medical supplies for Project CURE. Project CURE provides boxes of medical supplies – including surgical items, medications, and instruments – to medical centers in developing countries. The “kits” are designed to be hand-carried by a short-term medical team for international use. Upon arrival, we’ll deliver the boxes to a registered recipient. Project CURE supplies the kits and we supply the muscle. The kits are designed like luggage – a great idea for a trip like ours.
You + Laughter = Fighting Poverty in Belize
March 31, 2008
Come out to Comedy Caravan next Thursday, April 10, to see David Crowe, the comedian whose humor the BBC called “…a totally original style of brain bending jocularity.” Need more convincing? “Brad from Indiana” said David Crowe made him “…laugh so hard the candle on the table burned my forehead.” The show, which also features comedian Spanky Brown, benefits the Bellarmine in Belize service-learning trip. Tickets are $10. Support a great cause while enjoying brain bending jocularity. It’s win-win. For tickets, please see Melanie Evans in Horrigan-225K, Jessica Randall in Petrik Hall, or Jim Welp in BOB-330.
BEST partner
March 12, 2008
Based upon our research to date, we are hoping to partner with the Belize Enterprise for Sustainable Technology, or BEST. BEST has a great track record in Belize. They operate all over Belize, with headquarters in Belmopan. BEST is sanctioned by the Belizean government, has a history of working with women to provide small loans, and is a non-profit organization. Look for more updates about BEST as we continue our negotiations in advance of our trip in May.

Welcome to Bellarmine in Belize
February 6, 2008
In May, a group of Bellarmine business, economics, and communication students, along with faculty and staff advisors, will travel to Belize on a service-learning trip designed to help bring micro-lending to that country’s struggling entrepreneurs. We’re now in the planning and fundraising stage and we’ll write about our efforts here.
We are currently meeting every Friday as a group to plan our trip. We’re also meeting monthly with the Downtown Rotary Club, which has collaborated with Bellarmine on past trips and will work with us again this year.
Please check back to learn about our exciting venture and to find out how you can help!
